Nigerians are frustrated and looking for political change by 2027

Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Henry Seriake Dickson, says growing frustration among citizens over the state of the nation is fueling a strong desire for political change ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dickson made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigerian Democratic Congress’ digital membership registration portal, describing the platform as an important step towards expanding the party’s reach and strengthening its organizational framework across the country.

The inauguration ceremony was led by the party’s national leadership along with National Chairman, Cleopas Moses; National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu; as well as several state chairs, party officials and stakeholders.

Speaking about the country’s political atmosphere, Dickson said many citizens are increasingly disillusioned with the current situation and are looking for credible alternatives in the world of politics.

He said, “Nigerians are angry with the status quo. Nigerians are not only angry, they are hungry, and hungry for change. The NDC is available as a tool to bring about the change Nigerians want.”

The senator described the party as a new political platform free from internal conflicts and committed to ideological politics and national development.

Drawing from the biblical narrative, the former governor compared the emergence of the party to the story of Noah’s Ark, thereby encouraging Nigerians seeking true political transformation to identify themselves with the movement.

“The NDC in Nigeria today, politically, is like Noah’s family. Those who can see the signs should join in immediately,” he urged.

Dickson also highlighted the importance of the newly introduced digital membership system, stating that it will modernize the party’s operations and enable wider participation among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

He added that even though the party is only a few weeks old, it has started to attract attention and support from various parts of the country.

According to him, the party has been structured as a national-scale democratic movement with experienced political figures who coordinate activities at the state, regional government and sub-district levels.

“We are a national party. We are a pan-Nigerian democratic movement. We are not a regional movement,” Dickson said.

Also speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, explained that the digital membership portal will simplify the process of joining the party and encourage wider participation among Nigerians.

He noted that this initiative reflects the party’s commitment to adopting digital tools that promote transparency, accountability and inclusivity while strengthening its grassroots presence across the country.

The launch of the portal comes about a week after Dickson officially announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party, citing persistent internal crises and what he described as poor leadership within the opposition party.

Senator Bayelsa made the announcement at a world press conference held at his residence in Abuja, where he lamented the decline of the once dominant political party.

While speaking to journalists at the time, he expressed concern over what he described as the party’s deteriorating condition, and noted that the PDP, which once inspired hope and enthusiasm among its supporters, had become greatly weakened.
