The Maiduguri bombing is proof of the failure of the APC-led government in the security sector—PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Monday’s suicide bomb attack in Maiduguri, Borno State, as evidence of the failure of the APC-led government to tackle rising insecurity in the country.

The bombing left at least 23 people dead and more than 100 injured.

In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, on Tuesday, the PDP said that the bombings added to a long list of security challenges that have worsened under the APC government, and claimed that insecurity, which was initially limited to the North East region, had now spread to previously peaceful areas of Nigeria.

The statement read in part, “The recent multiple bombings in Maiduguri, which resulted in at least 23 deaths and injured over 100 people, are further undeniable evidence of the inability of the APC-led federal government to curb rising insecurity in the country.

“This bombing is an unfortunate addition to the various serious acts of insecurity that occurred under the watch of President Bola Tinubu, who was the loudest campaign voice for the APC, promising to immediately end insecurity if his party was elected.

“Sadly, 11 years later, insecurity has not only increased significantly in the North Eastern part of Nigeria; it has also spread almost uncontrollably to many other areas of the country that were until recently very safe and peaceful.

“Despite these glaring failures, the APC-led Presidency has devoted more time, energy and resources to the task of political genocide against the opposition, rather than deploying the same to combat the growing insecurity that has become a fact of life and the new normal in Nigeria. No one, including the President, would disagree that our country was safer in 2015 than it is today.”

The party expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and urged the government to move beyond rhetoric, but instead advocate a whole-of-society approach that includes strategic engagement with community leaders to address security challenges.

The PDP also called for immediate and effective action to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of citizens nationwide.

“While we sympathize with the families affected by this cowardly and most condemnable act, we call on the federal government to go beyond mere rhetoric on security issues and engage strategic stakeholders, especially community leaders, as part of a whole-of-society approach to fighting insecurity,” he added.
