Senegal’s football authorities have rejected the recent ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), calling it “unjust, unprecedented and unacceptable”, while warning that it could undermine the integrity of football administration in Africa.
In a swift response, Senegal confirmed its intention to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the highest authority in global sporting disputes, underlining that all domestic appeal options within the CAF have been exhausted.
The controversy follows a decision by the CAF Appeals Committee, which ruled that Senegal had abandoned the match.
Senegal, however, insists that the match be restarted and played within the remaining regulation time.
Reports indicated that the stoppage lasted less than the 15-minute threshold typically required to declare a match abandoned, with additional time, including extra time, reportedly played, casting doubt on CAF’s conclusion.
The case will now move to international arbitration, where the CAS is expected to examine both the handling of the incident and the interpretation of events.
