Nigerian justice led panel that awarded AFCON victory to Morocco

Yesterday it emerged that the Appeal Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had awarded the title of the just concluded AFCON to hosts Morocco, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Morocco were defeated 1–0 by Senegal in the tournament final, which was marred by a Senegal exit after Morocco were awarded a dubious penalty late in the match. The match resumed after almost twenty minutes.

Brahim Díaz took the resulting penalty, but his attempt to score what is called a panenka failed and Eduoard Mendy saved his attempt with ease, sending the match into extra time.

Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time to give his team the title of African champion. Morocco protested that they should be awarded the title because Senegal was out of the game during that period of time.

Yesterday at the hearing on his appeal to the CAF decision to recognize Senegal as champions. The Appeal Committee chaired by Nigerian judge Roli Daibo Harriman awarded the match to Morocco.

She led the nine-member team that made the decision, which has since become a global issue as Senegal rejected the ruling and took its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
