NCC is committed to expanding broadband access across Plateau State

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to bridging the digital divide in disadvantaged communities, with a particular focus on Plateau State.

This was revealed by Mrs. Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management of the NCC, during a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at Government House, Jos on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of the Commission, Ms Makama described Plateau as a “strategic and indispensable partner” in Nigeria’s national broadband agenda, citing the state’s strong educational institutions, vibrant innovation hubs, young population and policies supporting digital transformation.

“We recognize Plateau State not only ceremonially, but strategically,” he said. “Many rural local government areas remain disconnected from the digital economy. Closing this gap is a shared responsibility and the NCC stands ready to play its part.”

The visit marks the beginning of discussions to leverage the NCC’s Universal Service Delivery Fund to expand broadband coverage in the state’s underserved communities.

Governor Mutfwang lauded the Commission’s recognition of Plateau’s digital potential, highlighting ongoing initiatives including an innovation hub at the Plateau State Polytechnic, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and a memorandum of understanding with Solitran to accelerate broadband deployment across the state.

The governor also announced plans for a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) initiative that will provide jobs to 500 youths in Jos, underscoring the need to move from political statements to practical, high-impact digital projects, particularly in sectors such as artificial intelligence and e-commerce.

Mutfwang stressed that the modernization of administrative systems within the state public administration remains crucial to fully exploit the potential of digital innovation and improve governance.

With these developments, Plateau State is positioning itself as a leading hub for technology-led growth in Nigeria, signaling strong public-private collaboration to harness digital
