Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has recorded notable strides in the development of sports in Ogun State, positioning the state as a rising power in the Nigerian sports landscape.
Through deliberate investments, improved athlete wellbeing and strategic improvements to sporting infrastructure, the sector has witnessed significant transformation.
One of the most notable achievements is the outstanding performance of Ogun State at the National Sports Festival where the Ogun team finished second overall with a historic haul of medals, their best ever finish. This milestone reflects improved planning, effective talent discovery and improved competitive readiness under the current management.
In recognition of excellence, Governor Abiodun approved more than £450 million in cash rewards for athletes, coaches and officials. Gold medalists received ₦2.5 million, silver medalists ₦1.5 million and bronze medalists ₦1 million, demonstrating a strong commitment to motivation, rewarding hard work and the overall well-being of athletes.
Revitalization of MKO Abiola Sports Complex, A highlight of the administration’s achievements is the comprehensive renovation of the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta. This emblematic project has transformed the facilities from a conventional stadium to a modern multi-sports center capable of hosting top-level competitions.
Formerly known as MKO Abiola Stadium, the facility underwent major upgrades and expansions, leading to its reclassification as a full-fledged sports complex. This transformation aligns with the administration’s broader vision of repositioning Ogun State as a leading destination for sports development in Nigeria.
The renovation provided world-class facilities, including a hybrid football pitch, a standard tartan athletics track, a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool and multiple basketball, tennis and handball courts. Additional features such as lighting, digital scoreboards, upgraded changing rooms and upgraded VIP and media sections have further elevated the resort to international standards.
Beyond infrastructure, the upgraded complex has significantly boosted sports development by providing a conducive environment for training, talent discovery and competition. It has also strengthened Ogun State’s capacity to host major sporting events, while stimulating sports tourism and economic activity within the state.
