Ododo commends journalists for demonstrating a high level of professionalism – THIS UPDATE

Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has commended practicing journalists in the state for demonstrating high level of professionalism in carrying out their constitutional duties.

Governor Ododo gave the eulogy while speaking at the Press Week 2026 organized by the Nigeria Kogi State Council (NUJ) Journalists Union Correspondents Chapel, held in Lokoja on Thursday.

He appreciated practicing journalists in the state for their constructive criticism which helped the present administration serve the people better

“We appreciate the media’s focus on promoting good governance. We also identify with the media highlighting our shortcomings to improve service delivery”

Governor Ododo, represented by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, called on journalists to uphold the spirit of objective, accurate and balanced reporting of the society they live in.

He warned them to avoid sensationalist journalism capable of plunging the nation into chaos and crisis, as the case may be.

“As a mirror of society, journalists, in fulfilling their constitutional duties, must base their reporting on truth, facts and balance of accounts” underlined the governor.

The governor, however, assured that his administration will continue to provide an enabling environment for journalists in the state to practice their profession without fear or favour.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Kogi State Council Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Segun Salami also of Channels Television, said the Press Week was dedicated to celebrating service, sacrifice and commitment to the progress of humanity.

“It provides us with a platform to interact with stakeholders, review the role of media in society and chart new paths for ethical journalism. The week is also a time to appreciate individuals and organizations who have made notable contributions to social development”

Salami promised that journalists will continue to stand firm in the pursuit of truth, accountability and responsible governance.

Adeiza Momohjimo, the vice president of Zone D of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), in his goodwill message, lauded the cordial relationship prevailing between government and practicing journalists in the state.

He urged journalists to be professional in carrying out their electoral duties during the upcoming general elections in the country, stressing that they should be honest towards all political parties.

The Royal Father of the Day, the Ohimege-Igu of Koton-Karfe, His Majesty, Alhaji Saidu Salihu, in his remarks, commended journalists for shaping the society through development journalism.

The traditional ruler thanked the Kogi NUJ Correspondents Chapel for granting him the recognition to be part of the ceremony and pledged to continue to play an advisory role that would enhance his activities in the state.
