The All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of its caretaker committees in Ekiti and Osun states, as part of efforts to strengthen party structures and ensure stability.
The decision was made at the APC National Convention following a motion put forward by the Vice President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin.
Barau described the extension as an urgent administrative and organizational necessity aimed at supporting the party’s leadership structure and maintaining operational continuity in the affected states.
He said the tenure of the district, local government and state level guardianship committees in Ekiti and Osun was originally scheduled to expire at the end of March 2026.
According to him, the committees played a vital role in stabilizing the party’s affairs and ensuring effective coordination of activities.
The convention also affirmed elected officials at ward, state and zonal conventions, a move seen as strengthening the party’s internal democratic processes.
Barau stressed that the extension of the mandate of the temporary committees would allow for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the congresses, as well as adequate preparation by the relevant party bodies.
“It is appropriate, in the general interest of the party, to extend the mandate of the provisional committees to allow for adequate consolidation and preparation for the holding of the congresses,” he said.
He further said that the national convention, as the highest decision-making body of the party, has the power, according to its constitution, to take necessary actions to ensure stability and effective administration.
Following the deliberations, the delegates approved the extension, which will last from the end of March 2026 to the end of September 2026.
Barau urged stakeholders of the party to use the extension period to finalize all arrangements for the holding of district, local and state congresses in Ekiti and Osun, calling on members to remain calm and supportive.
