The military raised national alert, highlighting increased US support

The Nigerian Defense Headquarters has directed troops across the country to increase vigilance ahead of Easter celebrations, assuring citizens of beefed-up security presence across the country.

The military high command also reiterated that ongoing collaboration with the United States strengthens Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, with results expected to be visible in the near future.

Speaking at a month-end press conference in Abuja, Director of Defense Media Operations, Michael Onoja, said troops had been put on alert to prevent potential security threats during the festive period.

He noted that such proactive deployments are standard during major celebrations and have been implemented consistently during previous holidays.

“We know that the festive season usually increases security activities. The Military Command gave instructions to ensure all personnel are on alert. This time will be no different,” he said.

Onoja stressed that security agencies remained fully deployed, and warned that criminal elements often seek to exploit the holiday.

“I can assure you that we will always be vigilant, especially during this festive period, because we know that threats will allow us to relax.

“But we will not relax. Everything will be fine this Easter,” he added.

On international cooperation, the defense spokesperson explained that Nigeria’s partnership with US forces continues to yield strategic benefits, particularly in intelligence gathering and capacity building, although results are yet to be seen immediately.

“You are aware that they provide us with the intelligence and training support that we need. They provide it to us on very favorable terms. There are many things I cannot say because of confidentiality.”

He further disclosed that intelligence support includes actionable data on the location of enemy elements, which has been utilized by Nigerian forces in ongoing operations.

“All we can say is these things take time. There is a gestation period when we carry out military operations.

“You won’t see it right away, but in the next few months or weeks, you will feel the difference in the impact of the aid that the US is providing,” Onoja said.

This update follows previous confirmation from Defense Headquarters on February 16, 2026, that approximately 100 US military personnel and equipment have arrived at Bauchi Airfield to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign in non-combat roles, including training and technical advisory.

Despite this collaboration, insecurity persists in some areas of the country, sparking debate over the speed and effectiveness of ongoing joint efforts.
