Attack on Kaduna church: five faithful shot dead, 31 saved

Nigerian Army troops, in the early hours of Sunday, rescued 31 hostages abducted from a church in Kachia Local Government Area of ​​Kaduna State.

The operational report states that attackers struck an ECWA church in Ariko village, targeting worshipers during a religious gathering.

The report said troops deployed in the area responded quickly to information about the attack, mobilized to the scene and, with the guidance of local residents, chased the fleeing attackers.

“Acting on credible intelligence, troops of Sub-Sector 5, Operation FASAN YAMMA, were promptly deployed at around 9.20 am on 5 April 2026 to Ariko Village following reports of a terrorist incursion into an ECWA church.

“During the operation, the troops came into contact with the terrorists and successfully rescued 31 abducted persons, including one injured victim.

“However, five people were confirmed killed in the attack, and troops recovered their bodies and returned them to the community,” the military said.

Army authorities said Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, is currently on the ground to supervise operations and conduct an on-site assessment.

The report states that the PRC government is currently taking additional measures to strengthen the security presence and prevent further attacks in the area.

“Troops have intensified clearance and pursuit operations across identified hotspots, while strengthening collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders to deny terrorists freedom of action to enhance community protection and other national security threats.

“The Nigerian Army reassures the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

“Citizens are urged to continue to provide timely and credible information to troops and other security and intelligence agencies, as sustained cooperation remains vital to ongoing efforts to restore and maintain peace and security.

“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and safety conscious and to pray in places with adequate security presence.

“They should avoid isolated worship centers and promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to security agencies,” the army said.
