FG provides teachers in Borno with digital skills for modern classrooms – THISAGE

The Office of the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, through the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has organized face-to-face training for Science, Technology, Mathematics and Agriculture (STEMA) teachers in senior secondary schools in Borno State to acquire technical skills and teaching methodology for students.

The occasion took place on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The training program through the Academic Support and Skills Enhancement Program (ASSEP) project aims to improve teachers’ ability to integrate technology into their teaching methods, as part of a broader effort to promote education in the region.

With this move, teachers in Borno State are expected to leverage digital tools to make learning more interactive and engaging for students.

Gbenga Ojo, the lead training consultant, said the office of the Vice President organized the training to give teachers more stones to step on to be able to provide more viable teachings for senior secondary school students in Borno State.

He said upon completion of the training, teachers are expected to integrate technology into their teaching delivery after taking several courses.

Ojo said with the advent of technology, teachers should be able to utilize the technological advancement in the world to deliver results to students.

“It will encourage students to improve technologically, which is the pinnacle of in-person education,” he said.

ASSEP state contact, Suleiman Abba Sheriff, said so far about 250 teachers have benefited from the first and second batches of the training which has been certified by One Million Teachers and the National Institute of Teachers.

He said while 150 teachers were trained in the first batch, 100 teachers benefited in the second batch, of which 33 were selected from Northern Borno Senatorial District, 33 were selected from Southern Borno, while 34 were selected from Central Borno.

In a vote of thanks, the Personal Assistant for Home and North Eastern Affairs to the Vice President and member of the ASSEP Project Implementation Team (PIT), Comrade Mahmud Muhammad, said the day marked the successful conclusion of the face-to-face ASSEP training for senior secondary STEMA teachers in the 3 senatorial districts of Borno State.

He said this initiative, a joint partnership between NEDC and the Office of the Vice President, serves as a localized cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“By prioritizing human capital development, the program aims to close the education gap in the Northeast and equip the next generation with the technical skills needed for a 21st century economy.

“Through this initiative, a collaboration between the Office of the Vice President and the NEDC, we have witnessed an incredible journey of professional growth and pedagogical excellence.

“Teachers are the beating heart of our regional recovery. By equipping them with modern tools and innovative teaching strategies, we are ensuring that every student in the Northeast has the chance to strive for a bright future.

“Kudos to our leader, Dr Maryam Masha SSAP on NEDC and Regional Development, our point person, Mr Suleiman Abba, the lead facilitator, Mr Ojo and his vibrant team of experts, for their dedication, also to our participants for your rapt attention and a huge thank you to the OVP, NEDC and the Borno State Government for their unwavering commitment to human capital development,” Muhammad said.

One of the participants, a teacher from Government Girls Secondary School in Maiduguri, Fadilatu Mohammed, praised the Vice President’s Office for organizing the training, adding that it equipped her and other trainees on how to integrate technology into classroom work.
