Lagooz schools introduce archery to improve student concentration and academic performance in Lagos

The owner of Lagooz Schools, Chief Yomi Otubela, has said the introduction of archery into the school’s sports program is aimed at improving concentration, discipline and overall academic performance of the students.

Otubela revealed that the initiative, started about four years ago, is already yielding positive results among students. According to him, archery requires a high level of concentration and calm, qualities that also improve learning in the classroom.

“You need someone who can consistently maintain focus to achieve a goal. This same ability helps students stay engaged during lessons, no matter how long or challenging,” he said.

The school is associated with trainers from the Nigeria Police, who visit weekly to train students in archery techniques and discipline.

Beyond archery, Lagooz Schools is expanding its sports development initiatives through collaborations with key bodies including the Nigerian Athletic Association. Association officials recently attended the school’s internal sports competition to identify talented students for further development.

Otubela added that the school is also promoting football internationally while exploring partnerships in boxing to expand opportunities for students. He noted that boxing, like archery, emphasizes strategy, control and discipline rather than just physical strength.

Speaking about the school’s approach, sports coach, Chilota Nwali, said the aim is to expose students to a variety of sports beyond conventional options.

“We introduced activities that many of the students had never experienced before, and this has increased participation, especially among upperclassmen,” Nwali said.

He explained that the students went through a series of qualifying stages before the final events in the inter-house sports competition, and only the most consistent performers advanced.

The initiative reflects a growing trend among Nigerian schools to integrate various sporting activities into education as a means of developing well-rounded students with both academic and extracurricular strengths.
