EPL: Everton snatches a late equalizer against Manchester United

Manchester United twice surrendered leads as Everton fought back to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw in their Premier League clash at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.

United looked set to claim their first away win of the season after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko gave them the lead at different stages of the second half.

However, Everton refused to give up and produced a stunning late comeback, with Tyrique George and Ainsley Maitland-Niles finding the net to salvage a point for the hosts.

Mbeumo gives United the lead

After a goalless first half, United made the breakthrough shortly after the restart.

Mbeumo produced an impressive individual effort to give Michael Carrick’s side the lead and put the visitors in control of the contest.

United subsequently had the opportunity to extend their lead, with Bruno Fernandes also coming close to scoring when his shot hit the crossbar.

Everton rebels

Everton responded strongly as the match entered its closing stages, with Tyrique George netting a powerful goal in the 83rd minute to restore parity.

The equalizer gave the home side a boost of confidence but United looked to have done enough to take all three points when Sesko put them back in front in the 88th minute.

Maitland-Niles produces a stunning late equaliser

Everton, however, produced one final breakthrough in injury time.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, making her Everton debut after joining from Lyon, unleashed a spectacular long-range shot in the sixth minute of injury time to beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens and make it 2-2.

The late goal completed a stunning comeback and denied United victory after leading twice.

United’s defensive problems continue

The draw highlighted Manchester United’s defensive concerns, with Carrick’s side conceding two goals for the third consecutive Premier League game.

Despite creating enough opportunities to win the match, United were unable to protect their lead and had to settle for a point.

Carrick acknowledged after the match that his team needed to improve defensively, although he maintained that the overall start to the season had not been as bad as it seemed.

United have now picked up four points from their opening three league games, while Everton remain unbeaten after picking up five points.

Next Manchester derby for United

The result leaves United with little time to recover before another important test.

Carrick’s team will then turn their attention to Manchester City, with the Old Trafford derby offering an immediate opportunity to respond to the disappointment of having thrown away the victory against Everton.
