A faction in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Gombe, has declared that the recently held national convention of the party held by the coalition faction was illegal, as it violated existing court orders.
Gombe, while addressing a world press conference on Friday in Abuja, together with National Leader and member of parliament, Leke Abejide, accused the organizers of the April 14, 2026 convention of undermining the rule of law, and insisted that the implementation of the convention was carried out contrary to binding court decisions.
Gombe said the convention was contrary to the legal judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on March 12, 2026, which warned that any outcome of the meeting could be overturned by the Federal High Court.
“Any action taken in blatant disregard of the High Court’s decision not only has its validity doubted but can also be declared null and void,” he said.
He further pointed to the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the convention as proof that the conduct of the election did not receive official recognition and could not withstand legal scrutiny.
The ADC chairman emphasized that those behind the convention are not recognized as members of the ADC and therefore do not have the legal authority to organize a national convention or take binding decisions on behalf of the party.
“As far as the legitimate party leadership is concerned, the coalition group is not a member of the ADC and consequently has no locus standi to convene any congress or convention,” he said.

He added that the group’s actions were not surprising, alleging a pattern of ignoring legal processes and violations of the party’s constitution.
In a significant development, the ADC chairman said that the crisis has gone beyond internal party disputes, and exposed alleged criminal acts, including the circulation of fake documents bearing his signature.
“This matter is not an internal party matter. This is a violation of the ADC constitution and a violation of my rights as a bona fide member. Now it has escalated to the criminal realm by creating fake documents containing my forged signature,” he said.
Also speaking, Abejide described the gathering in Abuja as an “unlawful assembly” and “an affront to the judiciary,” and accused the organizers of willfully disobeying court orders from the Federal High Court and the Supreme Court.
He dismissed allegations that he and Gombe had been suspended by rival factions, describing the move as baseless and having no legal ramifications.
ADC faction leaders accused the coalition members of being serial defectors who had a history of switching political parties, and alleged that their involvement had undermined the stability of the ADC.
