Dumbraye: Smart City faces high expectations ahead of new NNL season

Smart City FC technical advisor, Eddie Dumbraye, has admitted that expectations are high ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, saying the club must be ready for a challenging season in Lagos.

Dumbraye, who spoke on the team’s preparations, noted that Lagos occupies an important position in Nigerian football, adding that the club’s location and ambitions would naturally bring pressure.

Expectations are very high. It’s not easy. We all know that in Nigeria, Lagos is like the center of football. Expectations are high and the club itself has its own expectations,” Dumbraye said.

He also acknowledged the quality of opponents Smart City will face, describing the team’s group as a tough bunch.

It won’t be a walk in the park. The group we are in is also a difficult group. But with the support of the club’s ownership and the players we are trying to acquire, I think we will do well. Hopefully we will do well,” he said.

In his assessment of the facilities and environment, Dumbraye expressed satisfaction with the stadium, describing it as a neutral venue which could offer visiting teams good chances.

I think the stadium is nice. It’s like a neutral ground for away teams. I’m also happy that the players have room and board. So I’m very happy,” he said.

Dumbraye also revealed that the club will step up preparations next week with intensive training sessions designed to improve the players’ physical condition and tactical understanding.

Next week we will have an intensive training in two sessions, which will include gym work and pressing exercises. I think we will do well,” he added.

Smart City is expected to continue to strengthen the squad as the club prepares towards the 2026/27 NNL season, with Dumbraye and the coaching crew focused on putting together a competitive squad capable of meeting the expectations surrounding the squad.
