Livestock bees ensure NPFL promotion while private clubs take historic leap

Ranchers Bees FC have officially sealed promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for the 2026/27 season, completing a remarkable return to the top flight despite a 2-0 loss to Kebbi United in their last match. They finished top of the NNL Conference D with 20 points after rivals Jigawa Golden Stars lost to Gombe 1-0 on Wednesday.

The Kaduna team claimed first place in their Nigerian National League (NNL) conference after a tense race for promotion, once again confirming their place among the elite.

They will be joined in the NPFL by three other promoted teams, Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos and Doma United, marking a historic change in Nigerian football as all four promoted teams are privately owned.

The development signals a growing trend towards private investment in the domestic game, a move widely seen as crucial to improving professionalism, infrastructure and competitiveness within the league.

For Ranchers Bees, the promotion caps a resurgence fueled by renewed ambition and support, with links to Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq adding further attention to the club’s resurgence.

Meanwhile, Lagos will have a strong presence in the upcoming NPFL season, with Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos joining top-flight Ikorodu City FC, underlining the state’s growing influence on Nigerian club football.

Attention now turns to the NNL Super Four playoffs, where the four promoted teams will battle for overall league supremacy ahead of the new NPFL campaign.

This promotion cycle could prove to be a turning point as private clubs begin to reshape the structure and future of professional football in Nigeria.
