
A renowned Nigerian hematologist/geneticist, Adeyinka Gladys Falusi, has been awarded the prestigious “Role Model Award” by the Hallmarks of Labor Foundation (HLF).
The award, according to a statement by the Executive Secretary of the Hallmarks of Labor Foundation (HLF), Patricia Otuedon-Arawore, was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medical research and national development.
Chief Madam Otuedon-Arawore said the award recognizes individuals whose professional achievements have had a significant impact on national development.
He maintained that the recipients are carefully selected as “great Nigerian role models”, whose lives serve as inspiration to future generations, adding that the recognition caps Professor Falusi’s decades of pioneering work in human genetics, particularly in research into sickle cell anemia and alpha thalassemia, which have contributed immensely to healthcare progress in Nigeria and beyond.
Delivering his citation, former President of the Nigerian Academy of Medical Sciences and Chief Medical Director of the Medical ART Centre,
Professor Oladapo A. Ashiru, described Falusi as a pioneer whose work has significantly advanced human genetics and healthcare delivery across Africa.
He highlighted his role in mentoring generations of healthcare professionals and expanding the frontiers of scientific research.
Former President of the Nigerian Academy of Sciences, Anya O. Anya, while speaking, eulogized the honoree, describing her as an icon of excellence and saying her achievements represent a milestone for Women In Science.
Anya noted that her contributions continue to inspire pride in the scientific community.

She highlighted the importance of building role models to guide young Nigerians and called for greater inclusion of women in leadership in academia and research.
The event drew widespread praise from peers, community leaders and professional bodies.
Among them, Dr. Akinwumi Fajola praised her lasting impact, particularly her continued advocacy for people living with sickle cell disease through her Foundation.
Her husband, Professor Abiodun Falusi, a renowned agricultural economist, and their children and grandchildren, also expressed pride in her achievements, describing her as a symbol of resilience, excellence, purpose and a strong commitment to family.
With this honor, Professor Falusi joins an elite group of past recipients, including Grace Alele-Williams, TY Danjuma and Chief Anyaoku, further cementing her legacy as one of Nigeria’s leading scientific icons.
The award was presented to her as part of the Foundation’s 29th anniversary celebrations, held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, attracting a distinguished audience of academics, professionals and industry leaders.
