Aid reaches hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza amid severe food insecurity

In Gaza, about one in five families say they only eat once a day, and 50 percent of them report that they ran out of food at least once in the past month, according to latest UN figures.

This is due to a shortage of cash, and also because most foodstuffs have become exponentially more expensive since hostilities escalated in October 2023.

So far this month, three-quarters of households in Gaza have faced difficulties accessing markets, according to the UN World Food Program (WFP).

UN on the ground

Yesterday, the UN and its partners collected hundreds of pallets of supplies from the Kerem Shalom crossing – an important commercial and humanitarian entry point located at the intersection of Israel, Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

The pallets contain fruit, vegetables and other foods, as well as adult diapers, school supplies and fuel.

So far, partners have provided food and flour packages to more than 600,000 people as part of the August cycle.

Fragile peace

Although a ceasefire was signed by Israel and Hamas in October 2025, ongoing hostilities and security restrictions hinder local movement and recovery efforts.

Frequent Israeli military attacks continue to kill and displace people in Gaza. More than two million people, almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip, were forced to flee their homes, and most now live in makeshift or fragile shelters.

Around 90 percent of civil infrastructure – including houses, hospitals, water installations and schools – was heavily damaged or destroyed.
