Seun Kuti recalled how his mother hid marijuana in bread for Fela while he was detained

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has shared his childhood experiences involving his parents, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Fehintola Kuti, when the music icon was in detention.

Seun said in a podcast broadcast on Thursday that the incident occurred when Fela was detained at the Federal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FIID) in Alagbon Close, Lagos. According to him, his mother hid marijuana in a piece of bread and asked him to give it to his father when he visited.

He explained that he was about eight or nine years old at the time and had no idea what he was carrying. His mother simply handed him the bread and told him to give it to his father when they arrived.

Unaware of anything unusual, he said he handed the item over to Fela without suspicion.

Seun added that he only found out what happened after they left the facility. Her sister later told her that the marijuana had been hidden in the bread, and stated that their mother had purposely hidden it to avoid the risk of her revealing it during the visit.

“We were going to visit my father, and my mother bought bread to give him. She hid ‘Igbo’ in the bread and asked me to hand it over when we got there,” he said.

“Mind you, I was about eight or nine years old. I didn’t even know what was going on. I just got there and gave the bread to my father.

“On the way home, my sister asked me if I knew there was Igbo in the bread. My mother had told her but didn’t tell me because she knew I might say something to the police.”
