The Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended the ongoing strike following an agreement reached after government intervention.
The state wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the union announced the decision in Gwagwalada on Sunday, saying it followed an emergency meeting to review the intervention of FCT minister Nyesom Wike.
The teachers had gone on strike on April 20, 2026, over unresolved issues affecting primary and secondary school workers in the FCT.
According to SWEC Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, the minister approved a financial package to address key demands.
This includes a monthly commitment of funds from the FCT’s internally generated revenue, as well as additional contributions from area councils.
Shafa explained that the agreement covers the payment of outstanding allowances, including a 40% extraordinary allowance, as well as the payment of arrears owed to teachers.
He further noted that the Minister was committed to engaging relevant authorities on promotion issues, including the removal of conditions that had slowed down career progression and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.
Following the resolution, the union directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to resume their duties on Monday, April 27, 2026.
The union, however, warned that it will review its position if the government fails to fully implement the agreement, also insisting that no teacher should suffer victimization for participating in the strike.
