Google will invest around $40 billion in AI startup Anthropic

Google is preparing to invest up to $40 billion in AI company Anthropic to deepen the complex relationships that blur the lines between competition and dependency in the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence landscape.

According to Bloomberg, the Alphabet subsidiary will provide an initial investment of $10 billion at a reported valuation of $350 billion, with an additional $30 billion tied to performance milestones—one of the biggest single bets in the current AI cycle.

Capital aside, the deal underscores a more decisive battleground: computing. Google is positioning itself not only as a model developer, but also as a critical infrastructure backbone that supports competitive AI systems.

This investment follows the launch of Anthropic’s newest model, the Mythos, which is described as its most advanced model to date, with exceptional cybersecurity capabilities. However, access remains restricted due to concerns over misuse, although reports suggest that the model has been leaked to unauthorized channels.

As AI models become increasingly complex and resource intensive, access to high-performance computing has become a major obstacle. Industry players are racing to secure chips, data centers and energy capacity on an unprecedented scale.

Anthropic has been aggressively expanding its infrastructure footprint, forging deals with providers like CoreWeave and getting billions of dollars from Amazon as part of a broader plan that could consume up to 5 gigawatts of computing over time.

Google, while competing directly in AI model development, remains Anthropic’s primary supplier through its cloud division, which provides access to tensor processing units (TPUs)—its in-house alternative to Nvidia’s highly sought-after GPUs.
