Cops Refuse $100 Million Bribe, Dismantle Train Vandalism Syndicate, and Recover $400 Million in Materials

Nigeria Police Force officers refused a 100 million naira bribe as they dismantled a major rail vandalism syndicate and recovered stolen materials worth over 400 million naira.

Police said the operation, conducted by the Special Tactical Team of the Force Intelligence Department, led to the arrest of two suspects – Chisom Goodnews, 32, and Ahmed Adamu, 22 – on April 9, 2026, in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, revealed in a statement on Monday that the suspects were arrested following credible information.

He said officers intercepted a trailer truck carrying about 60 tons of vandalized railroad tracks and sleepers hidden under bags of peanut shells in an attempt to evade detection.

“The operation led to the interception of a tractor-trailer truck carrying approximately 60 tons of vandalized railway tracks and sleepers,” Placid said.

“The materials were hidden under bags of peanut shells in a deliberate attempt to bypass security checks.”

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the truck had a $2.5 million contract to transport the stolen items from Bauchi State to Ilorin, Kwara State, indicating the existence of a coordinated supply chain linked to the recipients of the vandalized infrastructure.

Placid also revealed that officers resisted attempts to compromise the investigation.

“During the investigation, officers rejected an offer of $100 million made to secure the release of the suspects and exhibits,” he added.

Police said the truck used to transport the items has been recovered, while searches are underway to trace other members of the syndicate.

Reacting, the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, praised the officers for their professionalism and integrity.

He said their conduct reflected the core values of the Force, describing it as a demonstration of discipline, courage and incorruptibility in the fight against economic sabotage.

Police reiterated their commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and warned that those involved in vandalism will face the full weight of the law.
