Trump sparks outrage after sharing post proposing ‘Trump Strait’

US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after amplifying a proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” by resharing a post featuring the idea on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

The post included a map depicting critical maritime corridors with changed names, attracting widespread attention due to the Strait’s strategic importance to global energy supplies.

Connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, this narrow passage remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, with the majority of daily crude oil exports passing through it.

While the proposal appears symbolic, its timing raises doubts amid rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. The strait has historically been a focal point of disputes between the two countries, particularly over sanctions, maritime security and navigation rights.

Trump’s actions also mirror previous comments when he floated the idea of renaming the waterway — remarks that were largely interpreted as provocative rather than indicative of formal policy.

Despite the attention generated, any attempt to unilaterally rename international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz would have no legal basis, as such designations are governed by international conventions and long-standing global consensus.

However, this development coincides with the emergence of new concerns in the global oil market. Prices rose sharply as concerns grew about possible supply disruptions, with Brent crude hitting its highest level in years amid uncertainty surrounding the region.

According to a report by *The Economic Times*, oil prices rose on Thursday due to growing concerns over a prolonged US blockade of Iranian exports and stalled nuclear negotiations, both of which have raised concerns about tightening global supplies.

Brent crude oil has surged to unprecedented levels since mid-2022, as ongoing tensions related to the Iran situation continue to threaten stability along the Strait.

The spike followed an Axios report indicating that Trump had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait, and suggested that restrictions could remain in place until broader nuclear talks were concluded.
