
As part of efforts to improve grid management in Nigeria, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially handed over the expansion of the SCADA/EMS control room building at the Gwagwalada 330 kV transmission substation to the Nigerian independent system operator, NISO.
A declaration general General Manager, Public Business Ndidi MbahT saidThe facility will serve as a temporary National Control Center (NCC)in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Eng. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, described the occasion as a defining moment for the company and a significant milestone in the collective effort to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
Represented by the General Director, Project Coordination, Eng. Amini Tahir, MD/CEO, said that the completion of the plant marks not only the end of a construction project, but the beginning of a new phase in grid management and national energy coordination.
According to him, “The building was designed as a temporary home for the newly acquired SCADA-EMS and telecommunications systems, along with a dedicated team of operations personnel. It will now serve as a temporary operating base for NISO, enabling the organization to oversee network operations more efficiently and reliably until the permanent NCC becomes operational.”
He added: “With this handover, NISO will assume full responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the facility.
“We hand over this facility to NISO, because we believe it is critical to better network management, improved system reliability and improved service delivery for Nigerians. Together, we are laying the foundation for a stronger and more resilient network,” he said.
Eng. Abdulaziz also expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its continuous support throughout the project. He reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to collaboration, innovation and service excellence as the facility begins operations under NISO, ahead of the eventual commissioning of the permanent National Control Center in Gwagwalada.
In his acceptance speech, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, represented by the Director General, System Planning, Engr. Kabir Adamu.
He thanked TCN management for making the project a reality and described the handover as more than just an infrastructure transfer. He called it a fundamental step towards improving the operational capacity of the national electricity grid.
“We all recognize the importance of SCADA-EMS to network operations. This control room provides NISO with the necessary environment to begin operation of the SCADA/EMS project at this stage of its implementation,” he said.
He assured that NISO will manage the facility responsibly to support efficient grid operations and pledged the organization’s continued collaboration to advance the nation’s energy sector.
The Project Manager of TCN, Eng. Samuel Fakinlade, noted that once the permanent NCC building is completed, the equipment and personnel currently housed at the facility will be relocated and the building returned to the TCN.
The facility hosts the newly installed SCADA-EMS and telecommunications system, designed to support real-time network management and system operations. It will serve as a temporary control center to strengthen network management pending completion of the permanent NCC building.
