Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday urged Nigerian workers to remain steadfast in defending their rights and upholding the values of unity and collective struggle.
oshiom hole. a former President of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), made the call at the 2026 International Labor Day rally in Abuja.
He reflected on the historical significance of the labor movement, and noted that the celebration arose not from good intentions but from sustained resistance to exploitation.
“We celebrate this day not as a gift from capitalists, but as a product of struggle.
“There was a time when labor unions were prohibited, from that tradition we prove that the wheels of production cannot run without workers,” said the former governor.

Oshiomhole decried the poor welfare of some Nigerian workers, especially those who earn as little as N40,000 and N45,000 monthly despite the rising cost of living.
“The law on minimum wages was created to protect workers and must be fully enforced by the government and the private sector,” he said.
He advised workers to remain united in fighting exploitation and also ensure that employers comply with labor laws.
He also pledged solidarity with workers in a legitimate struggle aimed at defending their rights and dignity.
“Whenever you want to move around Abuja, to confront those exploiters, I want to be by your side.
“Not symbolically, but geographically, so together we must ensure that the laws passed by the government are obeyed by everyone,” concluded Oshiomhole.
