WWCQ U-17: The Flamencos aspire to say goodbye to Benin and get a place in the final

Nigeria’s U-17 girls, the Flamingos, will take another significant step towards the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026 when they host their neighbours, Benin Republic, in the first leg of the final qualifying round at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, on Saturday.

A place in the world’s top competition is now within reach, with just two matches between the Flamingos and another World Cup appearance.

It is a familiar stage for one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, but that does not diminish the importance of the task ahead. While Saturday’s match will not decide the outcome of the tie, a positive result would give Nigeria a crucial advantage ahead of next week’s second leg in Benin.

The Flamingos have looked formidable during the playoffs. Akeem Busari’s team overcame Guinea with a resounding 11-0 aggregate victory, demonstrating their superiority in all aspects.

Nigeria combined fluid attacking football with defensive solidity, creating opportunities at will and leaving their opponents little space to threaten. The performances highlighted not only the team’s technical quality but also its growing discipline and tactical maturity.

Determined to maintain that momentum, the Nigerian Football Federation and the technical team ensured that the team remained in top condition through intense training sessions and a series of competitive friendly matches. Preparations have been geared towards keeping the players fit for what is expected to be their toughest task of the campaign.

The Flamingos have a proud pedigree in African youth football. Over the years, they have consistently produced talented players capable of excelling on the continental stage while also making Nigeria proud at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Benin Republic, however, will travel to Ikenne full of confidence after eliminating Sierra Leone 5-1 on aggregate to reach the final qualifying round. Their impressive run underlines the progress they have made and they will be eager to defeat one of Africa’s traditional powers.

Although Nigeria are favorites, the Flamingos know that qualification will not be achieved based on reputation alone. Maintaining concentration, organizing defensively and taking advantage of their opportunities in front of goal will be vital in both games.

With another World Cup berth within their reach, the Flamingos have every reason to believe they can get the job done. Their dominant displays against Guinea, their meticulous preparations and rich history at this level provide a solid platform, but first they must deliver another disciplined and convincing performance in front of their home fans on Saturday.
