By Victor Osula Abuja

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has established the Violent Crimes Response Unit in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to address the increasing cases of serious crimes.

The establishment of the new Violent Crime Response Unit is designed to serve as a strategic, specialized, rapid response strike force against violent crime nationwide.

Abuja Police sources confirmed that the new unit is part of a major restructuring of the police’s tactical teams aimed at improving operational efficiency and tackling kidnapping and banditry.

The new Unit is designed to serve as a strategic, specialized, rapid response strike force against violent crime nationwide.

The unit aims to combat armed robberies, kidnappings, murders and cultism, with a focus on intelligence-led operations.

It is confirmed that the commanders of the new units have been selected and summoned to Abuja, the police headquarters, to be briefed on the operational procedure of the new unit.

The team of IGP Commanders of the Violent Crime Response Unit was launched by IGP Disu on Wednesday 29 April 2026 at the Force Headquarters Abuja Peace Keeping Hall Louis Edet House.

It was also learned that with the creation of the new violent crimes units, the GP ordered the dismantling of various existing, non-specialist tactical units at the state command level to make way for this new streamlined structure.

The IGP also warned against abuse of power, stressing that the new units must operate within the boundaries of human rights and professionalism.

High-level police sources also confirmed to journalists in Abuja that the IGP has ordered a large-scale upgrade of all police forensic laboratories and digital resource centers to support investigations with technology.

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) is also updating the national crime database to facilitate intelligence-based identification and policing.

The Police Mobile Force (PMF) is being reorganized to return to its original mandate of dealing with riots and violent threats, with personnel withdrawing from non-core duties such as VIP escort.

These actions reflect the new IGP’s drive to modernize the Force and increase accountability.
