Benfica’s teenage sensation turns his back on Super Eagles for Ireland

The Republic of Ireland have moved ahead of Nigeria in the race for the 18-year-old Benfica Under-23 striker’s international future by handing him a first invitation to their senior team, OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Born to Nigerian parents in the Irish city of Cork, he is a teammate of another Nigerian, Peter Edokpolor, in the Portuguese under-23 team and was rumored to be on the radar of the senior Nigerian team.

However, Nigeria’s chances of attracting him have been seriously affected as he is one of seven new players included in the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time for May’s friendly against Grenada.

He began his career with Cork City in the League of Ireland, making his debut in November 2023 aged just 15, making him the youngest player to make a senior appearance for the club.

Umeh also became Cork City’s youngest goalscorer when he scored against Wexford FC, aged 16 years and 14 days.

He then made 15 appearances for the club before joining Portuguese side Benfica in July 2025, where he is currently a member of the under-23 team.

Umeh has represented the Republic of Ireland at U15, U16 and U17 levels. He was called up for the U17 World Cup in Qatar 2025, where his performances earned him the call to join the U21 team.

You will now be able to experience the senior setup for the first time.
