An aggrieved employee, James Oketa, has sought damages of $22.3 million from his former employer, Super Engineering Company Limited, for what he described as the unlawful termination of his employment.
Oketa, who worked with the company located in Ikorodu Industrial Area in Lagos, was reportedly sacked on December 5, 2024, after about 30 years of service.
The company is said to have cited his involvement in union activities as the reason for his disengagement.
However, in a letter dated February 5, 2026, addressed to the company’s CEO, Oketa’s lawyers, Zimra Attorneys (Legal Practitioners & Associates), described the dismissal as illegal and a violation of his fundamental right to freedom of association.
The legal team argued that the reasons for the dismissal were unjustifiable and constituted a violation of the employee’s constitutional rights.
They are seeking a total sum of N22,297,550 as compensation, covering unpaid salaries from December 2024 to February 2026, in addition to damages for the alleged unfair dismissal.
Efforts to resolve the dispute appear to have moved towards legal channels, with both sides already retaining a lawyer.
In reaction, the company’s CEO, identified simply as DeGab, said the matter had already been reviewed by the company’s legal counsel.
“The matter is being handled by our lawyer and we are not authorized to talk about it with anyone,” he said.
He added: “Our lawyer responded to one lawyer’s letter, only to get another involved.”
At the time of filing this report, no court filings have been confirmed, but sources have indicated that the dispute could soon escalate into litigation if both parties fail to reach an amicable resolution.
