Police expands complaints response unit, asks Nigerians to report misconduct through 24/7 channels – THIS FACILITY

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expanded the capacity of its Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) and urged the public to make full use of its 24/7 reporting channels to report instances of misconduct, abuse of office, extortion and other unprofessional conduct by police personnel.

The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, made this known during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the press held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

A statement signed on Thursday by the Force’s public relations officer, DCP Anthony Placid, explained that the strengthened complaints response unit is part of ongoing institutional reforms aimed at improving accountability, enhancing professionalism and rebuilding public trust in the police across the country.

According to him, the unit operates around the clock, ensuring that citizens have uninterrupted access to report incidents involving police misconduct.

The IGP stressed that the reform-oriented initiative is designed to make the police more responsive and transparent, noting that all complaints received through the CRU are treated confidentially and investigated promptly. He added that disciplinary measures are consistently taken against officers found guilty after due investigation.

He also encouraged Nigerians to actively engage in the system by reporting offenses responsibly, stressing that effective policing requires cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies. He assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting the rights of citizens while enforcing discipline within its ranks.

Reiterating the Armed Forces’ commitment to lasting reform, police leadership said strengthening the CRU is vital to restoring trust and ensuring officers strictly adhere to professional standards and the rule of law.

Disu reaffirmed the Police’s desire to deepen accountability mechanisms and improve public engagement, underlining that the enhanced complaints system reflects the institution’s broader drive towards transparency and service improvement.

It argued that the CRU’s expanded framework represents a significant step in its ongoing reform agenda to ensure a more accountable, people-centred and professionally led policing system nationwide.
