Arsenal close in on league title after dramatic win against West Ham

Leandro Trossard’s late goal and an even later VAR decision took Arsenal a step closer to their first Premier League title in 22 years at West Ham, the Mirror reports.

The Gunners were far from their best, with the importance of the match weighing heavily, but they did the job to move five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Trossard went close with consecutive headers from a corner early on, while Riccardo Calafiori threatened twice in a dominant opening from the away side.

Konstantinos Mavropanos then made a crucial block to prevent Calafiori’s header from a Declan Rice free kick.

West Ham forced David Raya into a good save before the break through a diving header from Taty Castellanos.

Following Ben White’s injury, Mikel Arteta was forced to make continued tactical adjustments, including replacing substitute Martin Zubimendi, but the Hammers remained resolute.

Mateus Fernandes should have made it 1-0 for the hosts, but Raya took advantage of the opportunity to save the midfielder’s one-on-one. And the importance of that save was highlighted when Trossard’s deflected shot – his first goal in 25 games – put Arsenal ahead at the other end in the 83rd minute.

Callum Wilson appeared to have equalized from a corner in injury time, but VAR intervened to disallow the score for a foul by Pablo on Raya, unleashing fury at the London Stadium.

But Arsenal held on and, with games against Burnley and Crystal Palace to come, are heavy favorites to win the title.
