APC stakeholders in Kano Senatorial District have rejected the emergence of former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, as the consensus candidate for the Kano Central seat.
The refusal is contained in a petition addressed to the APC National Chairman and copied to the Kano State APC Chairman among others.
The petition, signed by Prof. Ibrahim A.Sani, an academic/political analyst of the group, among nine other stakeholders, and read to journalists by fellow Nazifi Kamilu Yan Awaki, therefore urged the APC national leadership to conduct direct primaries to elect a candidate for Kano Central Zone.
“We respectfully express our grave concern over the emergence of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as the presumptive consensus candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial Candidate of the APC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Many party stakeholders and supporters do not view the agreement as a genuine consensus freely negotiated and voluntarily accepted by all aspirants,” Yan Awaki said.
According to him, the emergence of Malam Shekarau through the consensus agreement has caused disaffection and frustration among APC members and other stakeholders of the party in Kano Central area.
He said these party loyalists have invested a lot of time, resources and mobilization efforts in anticipation of transparent and straightforward primaries.
“We respectfully believe that direct primaries remain the most credible and democratic mechanism to fairly resolve competing interests, while strengthening the legitimacy of the prospective nominee and preserving party unity,” the stakeholders said.
Accordingly, they urged the APC national leadership to review the circumstances surrounding “the alleged consent agreement in Kano Central and ensure that all aspirants and stakeholders are treated fairly and transparently in accordance with democratic principles.
They also called on the leadership to approve the holding of transparent and direct primaries for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket.
“We believe this remains the best path to restore stakeholders’ confidence, preserve party unity and strengthen APC’s electoral position in Kano Central, ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the group added.
