
The Nigeria weightlifting team that participated in the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships on Saturday completed their participation by winning five more medals.
The contingent of 10 athletes and three officials marked Nigeria’s dominance on the continent by winning a record 29 medals overall: 14 gold, 13 silver and 2 bronze
Mary Osijo, who competed in the women’s 79kg category on Friday, won three silver medals, while Lucky Joseph, who competed in the men’s +110kg category on Saturday, won two bronze medals.
Osijo lifted 95kg in the clean and 116kg in the clean for a total of 280kg to win all three medals up for grabs.
For his part, Lucky Joseph lifted 145 kg in the clean and 170 kg in the clean for a total of 315 kg to win two bronze medals.
Nigerian female athletes emerged third on the continent after winning 12 gold and 6 silver medals.
