Aston Villa win the UEFA Europa League 44 years later

Aston Villa won the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League on Wednesday evening by beating German side Freiburg 3-0 in the final at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul.

Goals galore, it’s worth the wait

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers secured the victory, ending the club’s 30-year wait for a major trophy and marking manager Unai Emery’s record fifth Europa League title.

This is Villa’s first major European honor since winning the European Cup in 1982, and their first ever trophy since the 1996 League Cup.

Emery managerial effect and wide European possibilities for England

Unai Emery further cemented his legacy in this competition by claiming his fifth Europa League title.

As Villa have secured top five status in the Premier League, the Europa League triumph means the Premier League keeps alive its chances of securing a sixth place in the Champions League next season, depending on the final table.

Freiburg continued to wait for over a century

Freiburg, whose 122 years of existence have never been honored by a major trophy, could not live with Villa’s intensity in the Premier League, and the gulf in class between the two teams was evident midway through the first half.

The beginning, accentuated clash

The game was cagey in the opening exchanges, with both teams content to play straight, but Villa consistently remained in control. The deadlock was broken in the 41st minute thanks to a cleverly designed corner routine, Rogers playing short before providing a precise delivery for Tielemans, who met the ball in motion and launched a right-footed volley through Maximilian Eggestein’s legs into the bottom corner.

It was the second consecutive game in which Villa had opened the scoring with an intricately set-up set piece, following a similar routine that had released Rogers in the box against Liverpool the previous Friday.

Coach Austin MacPhee’s fingerprints were visible.

Villa doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when Buendia received the ball on the edge of the area, opened up his body and launched a stunning left-footed shot into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no escape.

Villa went into half-time 2-0 up and seemingly in full control.

All Freiburg’s hopes vanished in the 58th minute. A fluid pass involving McGinn, Digne and Buendia, whose low cross split the Freiburg defense in two, allowed Rogers to slide to the near post and tap home. At 3-0 the match was over.

Freiburg’s most dangerous outlet, 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, named in Switzerland’s World Cup squad earlier in the day, tested Emiliano Martinez with a long-range shot in the first half and caused isolated problems with his athleticism and long balls, but was largely nullified. Amadou Onana hit the left post with a header from close range in the 70th minute as Villa flirted with a fourth.

Emery made late substitutions to manage the closing stages, bringing on Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho in the 81st minute for Digne and Buendia to comfortably complete Villa’s evening.

So close, yet without cutlery

For Freiburg, the defeat is the painful conclusion of an extraordinary run. Founded in 1904, the club has never won a major title. They came close in 2022, losing on penalties to RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal final.

Under Julian Schuster, who played for the club for a decade before retiring in 2018 and took over from the venerated Christian Streich as manager in 2024, they had impressed all season, eliminating Genk, Celta Vigo and Braga on the way to Istanbul. Wednesday’s final, however, highlighted the limits of what they could offer against a team in Villa’s current form.

Villa enter the summer having also secured the Champions League for the second time in three seasons, with the 4-2 win over Liverpool on Friday sealing that berth. Ollie Watkins, Rogers and McGinn each scored in that game, with the same trio providing the creative pulse here too.
