The Labor Party petitioned the police, DSS for alleged illegal distribution of nomination forms

The Labor Party has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) over the alleged illegal distribution of nomination forms by the party’s former national chairman, Julius Abure.

The National Chairman of the party, Nenadi Usman, made the allegation while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the screening of candidates for the primary election on Thursday in Abuja.

Usman said a copy of the petition written to the IGP and DSS had also been forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He described the alleged circulation of the form as unlawful, and insisted that the leadership elected at the Umuahia party convention remained the recognized leaders.

“We received the news by surprise. It was a big shock because after the court declared his (Abure’s) term ended, we went to Umuahia, held a national convention and elected a new leader.

“INEC was there and acknowledged what we were doing. The names on INEC’s website were the names selected in Umuahia, then he came and started distributing forms,” said the former Finance Minister.

When asked if the party had received any notice of appeal, the LP chairman said that the party had not received any notice, regarding Abure’s alleged appeal to the Supreme Court.

Usman maintained that the Supreme Court would likely maintain its previous position in the party leadership dispute.

“My opinion is that the Supreme Court will maintain its stand. If the court says my term ends tomorrow, I cannot go back and say that my term has not ended,” he added.
