Harry Maguire admitted he was left “shocked and devastated” after discovering he would not be included in the England national football team’s next squad despite enjoying a strong campaign with Manchester United FC.

The 33-year-old defender, who has scored seven goals in 66 appearances for England, missed Euro 2024 after suffering a calf injury at the end of last season, but recently returned to feature in the Three Lions’ friendly matches.

“I was sure I could have played an important role this summer for my country after the season I had. The decision left me shocked and devastated,” Maguire said ahead of the team’s official announcement.

The former England vice-captain added:
“I have loved nothing more than putting on that jersey and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.”
