The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said its officials managed to disarm, and arrest, a Department of State Services (DSS) agent who fired two bullets around Africa after corps officers tried to stop him for a traffic violation.
The agency in a statement on Friday said the incident occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at around 3.20pm around Idu Command Unit RS7.118 in Abuja, when a FRSC patrol team reportedly stopped a driver of a Toyota Carina for an alleged traffic violation.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, claimed that during routine traffic enforcement, the driver allegedly refused to comply with a lawful direction to stop and continued to drive recklessly until he ended up stuck in traffic close to the commando.
FRSC officials said the situation escalated when officers approached the driver to conduct a routine check of the vehicle and the driver’s documents.
The agency stated that the suspect became hostile, verbally abusive and resisted law enforcement proceedings.
The Corps said despite efforts by personnel to professionally calm the situation, the suspect allegedly advanced toward officers before pulling out a handgun and firing two shots in the command vicinity.

“In the face of imminent danger to life and property, FRSC personnel acted with extraordinary restraint, professionalism and tactical discipline to quickly disarm the attacker without any loss of life. One Marshal suffered minor bruising during the process,” the statement said.
The suspect was immediately arrested and handed over to officers at the Nigerian Police station at Life Camp along with the firearm, ammunition components and the vehicle involved in the incident.
The FRSC revealed that initial findings later identified the suspects as DSS personnel, adding that the matter had been transferred to the appropriate state command for further investigation.
He emphasized that no individual or security officer is above the law, regardless of rank or institutional affiliation.
“No individual, regardless of status, rank or institutional affiliation, is above the law. Security personnel are expected to set an example through compliance with established traffic regulations and respect for competent authorities,” the statement added.
The FRSC boss also warned against the misuse of firearms and official influence on law enforcement officers carrying out their legitimate responsibilities.
“Firearms and official status must not be used as a tool of intimidation against law enforcement officers who carry out their legitimate duties,” he stressed.
The Corps also called for stronger cooperation and mutual respect among security agencies in the interests of public safety and national security.
