Veteran American tennis star Serena Williams has revealed that being listened to by medical professionals after experiencing life-threatening birth complications literally saved her life.
She emphasizes the importance of patient advocacy and medical listening, pointing out the profound disparities in health care that affect Black women.

in a talk with ForbesThe 44-year-old tennis legend spoke about her experience after suffering life-threatening birth complications and how it opened her eyes to broader issues in women’s healthcare.
“You know, when I told my story, I didn’t realize how many people could relate,” Williams shared during a panel at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit 2026. “And then at first I thought it was just a minority issue, but then I realized it’s a women’s issue.”
“A lot of women from all backgrounds had a nightmare about their birth, you know? And then… and then it came down to me thinking, ‘Well, God, if men were giving birth, they’d have candy.’ [and] “I eat all kinds of medications,” he added jokingly, “so it wouldn’t be the same problem at all.”
“I knew something was wrong with me and it was very important that they listen to me. Fortunately, my doctor listened to me. The nurses did it, but I was lucky enough to have a doctor who did it and literally saved my life.

“What these women are doing is letting us know that women’s health care is very important, and health care in general, because we are also talking about women taking care of children, you know, I take care of my children primarily.
“With the program, we can solve a lot of problems, make, like I said, those connections that are really vital, that are really important to opening so many doors,” Williams continued. Because every time we open a door, we are solving another problem that is closer to helping all of us in this room and helping our children.”
