It’s happening now: PDP crisis deepens as police seal headquarters for Jonathan’s endorsement

The blockade of the venue of the special congress planned by the Tanimu Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction is the latest chapter in a prolonged internal crisis that has left Nigeria’s main opposition party deeply divided ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What on the surface appeared to be a disagreement over a convention is, in reality, the manifestation of a larger battle over the soul and future direction of the PDP.

How the PDP became a house divided

The PDP’s internal problems did not begin with the expected support of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The party has battled leadership disputes since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election. Disagreements intensified over control of the party’s national structure, producing rival factions claiming legitimacy.

One bloc is associated with former Special Duties Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and enjoys support from influential figures in the party, including Seyi Makinde’s allies. The opposing camp is linked to Nyesom Wike and the leadership structure led by Abdulrahman Mohammed. Both factions have repeatedly turned to the courts and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognition and control of the party.

Court disputes over leadership conventions and structures have further complicated the crisis, leaving the party with competing claims to authority and legitimacy.

Wike’s growing influence in the opposition party

Although he currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in the APC-led federal government, Wike remains one of the most influential figures within the PDP. His continued involvement in party affairs has generated controversy among members who believe he wields disproportionate influence over opposition politics.

The latest controversy erupted after the FCT administration warned hotels, event centers and public facilities against hosting organizations and political groups not recognized by the relevant authorities. The directive came shortly before Jonathan’s scheduled endorsement rally, leading critics to accuse Wike’s camp of trying to frustrate the rally. The minister’s supporters, however, insist the move is purely administrative and security-related.

The timing of the directive immediately fueled suspicions because the convention was supposed to be held at the A-Class Event Center in Abuja.

Because Jonathan is at the center of the storm

The Turaki-led faction spent weeks promoting Jonathan as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The group initially announced plans to select him as the sole presidential aspirant, before moving on to organize a special convention aimed at ratifying his nomination.

The faction has consistently maintained that Jonathan remains a registered member of the PDP and is qualified to obtain the party ticket. He also dismissed reports linking him to other political platforms.

However, Jonathan himself has not publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 elections. Although various political groups have continued to encourage him to return to active electoral politics, there has been no formal declaration from the former president.

Who is Goodluck Jonathan?

Jonathan served as Vice President from 2007 to 2010, when he succeeded the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua following Yar’Adua’s death.

He subsequently won the 2011 presidential election and ruled Nigeria until 2015, when he lost his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari. His decision to admit defeat remains one of the defining moments in Nigeria’s democratic history and earned him international recognition. Since leaving office, Jonathan has focused primarily on diplomacy, election observation missions and peacebuilding initiatives across Africa. The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has also become a platform for governance and peace initiatives.

The convention that triggered the showdown

The Turaki faction has set May 30, 2026 for what it described as a special national convention dedicated solely to the ratification of Jonathan’s nomination as the PDP’s presidential candidate. Invitations issued by organizers described the meeting as a decisive step in preparing the party for the next election cycle.

The Wike-aligned faction immediately rejected the move, insisting that no recognized body of the PDP authorized such a convention. He warned party members and the public not to take the event seriously and urged Jonathan to distance himself from the process.

The police blockade increases political tensions

The dispute reached a dramatic climax when police officers barricaded the access roads leading to the A-Class Event Center on the day of the convention. The action effectively prevented delegates, supporters and organizers from accessing the venue.

For the Turaki faction, the blockade reinforced accusations that powerful interests were determined to prevent alternative voices from emerging within the party. For the rival camp, the convention itself lacked legitimacy and could not be recognized as an official PDP activity.

Implications for 2027

The latest confrontation highlights the scale of the challenge the PDP faces as it seeks to position itself as a credible opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections.

Instead of focusing on building a united front against the ruling APC, the party remains entangled in leadership disputes, legal battles and conflicting presidential calculations. The Jonathan endorsement saga has exposed not only divisions over personalities, but also deeper disagreements over who controls the PDP and what direction it should take in the years to come.

For now, the stalled convention in Abuja may be remembered less for Jonathan’s attempted endorsement and more as yet another symbol of a party still struggling to resolve its internal contradictions.
