Official: Peter Obi picks Kwankwaso as candidate for 2027 presidential race

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has named former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, signaling a major political realignment ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Obi announced the choice on Saturday, shortly after he was formally affirmed as the NDC’s presidential candidate at the party’s special convention in Abuja. The development effectively confirms months of speculation about a possible alliance between the two opposition figures who have maintained growing political commitments in recent months, blueprint.ng reports.

The former governor of Anambra State emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the party and was subsequently presented with the party flag by the NDC leadership in the presence of delegates and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A strategic opposition alliance

The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is seen by political observers as one of the opposition’s most significant partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections.

Both politicians were presidential contenders in the 2023 elections under different platforms and have maintained substantial support bases in various parts of the country. Their decision to unite under one platform is expected to alter the political calculations between opposition parties and the ruling establishment.

Obi enjoys considerable support among youth, urban voters and many voters in the south-east and parts of the south-south, while Kwankwaso remains a dominant political force in Kano state and several northern states through the influential Kwankwasiyya movement. The combination is expected to provide the NDC with a broader national reach as it seeks to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

From the ADC crisis to the NDC platform

The emergence of the joint ticket follows weeks of political maneuvering that saw Obi and Kwankwaso leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid persistent internal disputes, legal battles and disagreements over the direction of the party.

The two leaders formally joined the NDC in early May, after publicly announcing their resignations from the ADC. Their departure dealt a blow to opposition leaders’ efforts to build a broad coalition capable of presenting a united front against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.

Reports indicated that concerns over internal divisions, court cases and disagreements between stakeholders contributed to the decision to seek an alternative political platform. Shortly after their arrival at the NDC secretariat in Abuja, both leaders were received by party leaders led by former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, who is a prominent figure within the party.

Months of alignment before the formal partnership

Although Saturday’s announcement formally sealed the alliance, political observers had long anticipated a possible partnership between Obi and Kwankwaso.

In recent months, both politicians have held a series of consultations and strategic meetings that have fueled speculation about a joint presidential bid. One of the most notable meetings took place in Kano, where Obi, along with other opposition figures, met Kwankwaso amid growing conversations about opposition unity and political restructuring ahead of 2027.

Their subsequent joint exit from the ADC and eventual migration to the NDC further strengthened expectations that both leaders were working towards a common political goal.

The NDC expresses confidence

The NDC leadership has expressed optimism that the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would position the party as a formidable contender in the next presidential election.

Party officials described the alliance as a convergence of two influential political blocs capable of attracting support from different regions and demographic groups across the country. The leadership also said the partnership reflects the party’s commitment to building a broad-based national movement ahead of the 2027 contest.

With the official unveiling of the ticket, attention should now shift to how other opposition parties respond to the latest political developments and whether further realignments will emerge ahead of the elections.
