Former Aston Villa striker Alan McInally believes Celtic should retain Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho beyond this summer after the Nigerian’s strong finish to the season.
Iheanacho scored six goals in the final weeks of the campaign as Celtic secured the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup. However, uncertainty remains over his future, with his current contract set to expire on July 1 unless the club activates an option to extend it.
Speaking to the Daily Record, McInally said: “I would keep him. If he can perform like he has in the last six games throughout the season then he is obviously worth keeping.”
“That’s the big question though. It’s about keeping him fit. I don’t know if he’s enjoying Glasgow too much. Maybe Martin should tag him!”
“Joking aside, it would be interesting to see how he responds to a full pre-season. He clearly enjoys playing for Celtic. You can see that. And why wouldn’t he, playing in front of 60,000 people every two weeks and competing for trophies?”
“It’s up to him to have the discipline and attitude to play week in and week out.”
McInally also warned Celtic against losing a player of Iheanacho’s quality, particularly after his impact during the title race. A decision on the 29-year-old’s future is expected to be made in the coming weeks as the Scottish champions prepare for the new season.
