Rise and Fall of Ideals: Professor Eddie Oparaoji and Sen Bola Tinubu – by Bart Duru

Professor Eddie Oparaoji and Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu are two friends brought together by the circumstances of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola.

The central message of Chief Abiola’s campaign was “Goodbye to Poverty”. He appointed Professor Oparaoji in 1994, who was then president of a pro-democracy organisation, the Nigerian Democratic Awareness Committee (NDAC) which helped anchor the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in the United States, to head a Goodbye to Poverty task force, to develop the strategic plan to actualize his campaign theme.

By this time Senator Tinubu and Professor Oparaoji were strong allies of Chief Abiola and strong adherents of his centre-left ideology. They shared a vision of a better and more just society. Both were driven by a commitment to serve the people, fight corruption and promote progressive policies that uplift the masses.

Since then, the intriguing political journey of two once idealistic partners has diverged as Sen Tinubu transitioned into a conventional transactional corporate politician with questionable credentials and policies deemed hostile towards the people.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of their shared idealistic beginnings, tracing the transformation of their relationship into one marked by political discord, public scrutiny, public protests, and eroding the goodwill he had built up during his early years in politics.

The story of Professor Eddie Oparaoji and Sen Bola Tinubu serves as a cautionary tale about the fragility of political ideals in the face of power and ambition.

It highlights the importance of staying true to one’s principles and the potential consequences of straying from the path of public service and good governance.

The political landscape is constantly evolving, and the journey of these two partners serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that may arise along the way. Today, Senator Tinubu is now President Tinubu, who along the way has shed the mantle of defender of the people and does not know where to hide his claims of good governance.
