The Carthage Eagles became the first 2026 FIFA World Cup team to change coaches after Sabri Lamouchi was fired following a tough loss to Sweden in their first Group F match.

Tunisia was defeated by Sweden 5-1 on Sunday at the Monterrey Stadium, a result that prompted immediate action from the Tunisian Football Federation. Lamouchi’s departure was confirmed on Monday by the federation.

Sweden took early control through Yasin Ayari in the seventh minute, before Alexander Isak doubled the lead in the 30th minute. Tunisia responded briefly when Omar Rekik reduced the deficit just before the break.

Any hope of a comeback quickly ended in the second half. Viktor Gyökeres restored Sweden’s two-goal lead, Mattias Svanberg scored moments after coming off the bench and Ayari added his second in stoppage time to complete the rout.

Tunisia struggled to contain Sweden throughout, finishing with six attempts to Sweden’s 13, and just two shots on goal compared to their opponents’ seven.

The result compounds a difficult period for Tunisian football following previous changes in management. Lamouchi replaced Sami Trabelsi, who guided the team through a near-perfect World Cup qualifying campaign before being sacked following an AFCON exit in Mali.

No replacement has been announced. Tunisia now faces Japan and the Netherlands in the remaining Group F matches as they look to salvage their World Cup campaign.
