The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has unveiled a new digital broadcast initiative aimed at improving access to information, strengthening Nigeria’s media landscape and accelerating the transformation of the country’s digital economy.
The initiative, called “The Big Picture” and supported by digital broadcasting platform Free TV, was officially launched in Abuja.
NBC Director General Charles Ebuebu described the platform as an important step towards building a modern national communications system.
He said the initiative is designed to ensure that Nigerians, regardless of location or social status, can access high definition television, educational content and verified information services.
According to him, the project also aims to expand opportunities within Nigeria’s creative and broadcast industries.
Ebuebu explained that the “Big Picture” initiative is not only a technological upgrade but also a strategic economic project.
He noted that it is expected to spur investments, empower local content creators and strengthen Nigeria’s media ecosystem.
“The big picture is about democratizing access to information, unlocking creative opportunities and encouraging investment across the broadcast value chain,” he said.
He added that the platform would improve spectrum efficiency and expand consumer choice in the digital broadcast space.
The NBC boss said the initiative represents a milestone in Nigeria’s transition to fully digital broadcasting.
He linked the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes digital innovation and economic diversification.
Ebuebu also acknowledged the support of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
He emphasized that the success of the project depends on collaboration between government agencies, broadcasters, investors, manufacturers and development partners.
According to him, collective participation will ensure the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s digital broadcasting ecosystem.
Ebuebu expressed optimism that the platform would position Nigeria as a leading hub for digital broadcasting in Africa.
He said the initiative will also improve innovation, expand access to reliable information and strengthen the global competitiveness of the country’s media.
“Today, Nigeria is choosing a digital future built on innovation, inclusion and progress,” he said.
