School massacre in Iran: Trump insists strike ‘was not deliberate’

US President Donald Trump has said the airstrike on a school in Iran that reportedly killed more than 160 children during the initial phase of “Operation Epic Fury” was unintentional, insisting the incident is under investigation.

Trump made his first public remarks on the tragedy while addressing reporters on the sidelines of the G7 summit, where he came under renewed pressure over rising civilian casualties linked to the escalating US-Iran conflict.

The attack, which occurred in the southern Iranian city of Minab, triggered widespread international condemnation, with human rights groups and anti-war organizations calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the attack.

Responding to questions, Trump rejected suggestions that the attack was intentional. “Nobody did it on purpose,” he said, describing the question as “strange” in the context of a protracted conflict between the two nations.

He, however, acknowledged the severity of civilian deaths in war, stressing that errors can occur during military operations. “Mistakes are made. A war is bad,” the president added.

The American leader also sought to shift attention to Iran’s alleged history of attacks against American personnel, arguing that the broader context of hostilities should be considered when assessing the incident.

Trump revealed that the investigation is being handled by the US War Department, and Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to provide a report on the findings.

The attack has become one of the most controversial episodes of the ongoing conflict, amid reports that advanced artificial intelligence systems were deployed to help identify targets during the operation.

Critics, including international observers, have raised concerns about the use of AI-based targeting, warning that such technologies could increase the risk of catastrophic errors, particularly in densely populated civilian areas.

Although casualty figures have not been officially confirmed by US authorities, several reports indicate that at least 175 people, most of them schoolchildren, may have been killed in the strike.

Iranian authorities have condemned the attack, calling it a reckless aggression, while Washington maintains that its military operations were aimed at strategic targets linked to Tehran’s security infrastructure.
