The Oyo State House of Assembly has postponed any elaborate plans to celebrate its third anniversary due to growing security concerns in the state.
The Assembly announced on Thursday that the deteriorating security situation in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas was the main reason for the cancellation of the celebrations.
Lawmakers, rather than continuing with celebrations, chose to shift focus to governance and ongoing efforts to address security challenges affecting the population.
The 10th Oyo Assembly was inaugurated on June 14, 2023 and the anniversary marks three years of legislative activity.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Adebo Ogundoyin, said the decision was taken after careful consideration of recent events in the state, and stressed that the Assembly felt it important to stand with the people currently facing security threats.
Ogundoyin stated that the period is not suitable for celebrations, especially as many residents in the affected areas continue to grapple with safety issues, and added that the Assembly remains committed to its legislative responsibilities despite the security challenges facing the country.
“Thirty-six bills have been passed into law, covering various government and development sectors.
“We issued 276 resolutions, which were then forwarded to the executive branch and other relevant government institutions for implementation.
“The resolution is monitored through the oversight activities of various committees to ensure compliance and effectiveness,” he said.
According to the Speaker of the DPR, the DPR continues to strengthen governance through monitoring and accountability measures.
He disclosed that the Post-Legislative Monitoring Unit conducted a review of the implementation of key laws in the state, including the Livestock and Open Grazing Regulation Act of 2019 and the Oyo State Security Agency Act of 2020.
The Speaker further said that this review is necessary to assess how effectively the law has been implemented and whether the law is achieving its intended objectives.
Ogundoyin also highlighted the Assembly’s intervention in addressing insecurity through dialogue and stakeholder engagement.
He pointed to the security summit held by the legislature as one of their main responses to ongoing security concerns across the state.
