The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) and the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) have called for immediate humanitarian assistance for Nigerian citizens currently stranded in South Africa due to ongoing evacuation arrangements..
The appeal is contained in a joint statement released by community leaders and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
According to the statement, the emergency appeal was necessary due to the ongoing evacuation exercises, which have left several vulnerable Nigerians, including women, children and families, without adequate support.
Many of those affected are reportedly waiting at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, where conditions have become increasingly difficult.
The groups urged Nigerians, organizations and community leaders in South Africa to urgently mobilize in support of the stranded people.
They called for unity, compassion and collective responsibility within the Nigerian diaspora community.
“Any form of assistance, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in providing relief and restoring hope to those currently affected,” the statement read.
NUSA and NICASA have listed the essential needs needed to support stranded citizens, including:
- Food and basic necessities
- Temporary shelter and social support
- Financial assistance
- Basic necessities and humanitarian aid
They stressed that any contribution that could alleviate the difficulties would be invaluable during the crisis period.
Community leaders stressed that the situation requires collective empathy and support from all Nigerians, regardless of location or status.
“This is a time when our common humanity must overcome individual differences,” the statement adds.
“A needy Nigerian anywhere is a liability to all of us.
The groups also stressed that coordinated support would help preserve the dignity of affected Nigerians, while strengthening solidarity within the diaspora community.
They encouraged individuals, businesses and organizations capable of contributing to come forward without delay.
