Ogun police blame ‘attack gunmen’ in deaths of former OGTV employees

The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed widespread reports (PLATFORM TIMES not included), that a retired broadcaster, Mrs Kitan Oyesiku, popularly known as “Aunt Kitan”, was killed by gunmen, describing such claims as unverified and misleading.

Oyesiku, a former staff member of Ogun State Television, was found dead alongside her security guard at her residence in Kobape area of Abeokuta in the early hours of Sunday, sparking public outrage and speculation over the circumstances of the incident.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, cautioned against premature conclusions, stressing that ongoing investigations are yet to establish the exact cause of death.

He said: “There is currently no evidence to suggest that the deceased was attacked by armed men, as no gunshot wounds were found on the body. Members of the public and the media are therefore urged to respect the dignity of the deceased, to refrain from spreading unverified or speculative reports and to allow the ongoing investigations to run their full course.

“The Command assures that the results will be communicated in good time and launches an appeal for calm so as not to create unnecessary panic in the public space”.

Previous reports had indicated signs of forced entry into the residence, with the security guard’s lifeless body discovered at his workplace, while Oyesiku was found inside her apartment. His vehicle was also reported missing, further heightening suspicion of possible criminal activity.

However, police authorities said that while these circumstances are still under investigation, no definitive conclusions have been reached on the nature of the attack or the involvement of armed attackers.

The spokesperson added that officers were promptly dispatched to the scene following a distress call received at Owode Egba Division from a resident of Iyana Agodo village.

He noted that the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, had ordered a thorough and coordinated investigation, with detectives exploring multiple leads to unravel the incident.

The command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing credible information that could assist the investigation.

The incident has nevertheless left residents of Kobape and its surroundings in shock, amid growing safety concerns, even as authorities continue to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
