US-based sensation Blessing Ogundiran is the new women’s 100m national champion running 11.12 seconds in the final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games national trials in Lagos.
She beats Miracle teenager sensation Eluebube Ezechukwu who recorded a new personal best of 11:15 seconds in second position. Olajide Olayinka ran 11:28 seconds to place 3rd.
The men’s 100m final will take place tomorrow with Favor Ashe, Chidera Ezeakor, Fakorede Adekalu, Tejiri Godwin and Enoch Adegoke all reaching the semi-final after winning their various heats on Monday.
Speaking after the race, Ogundiran said: “When I was on the starting block, I was thinking about what my coach had told me that I should just run my race and not panic, and that’s what I did.
“It was difficult to get here after traveling for almost four days because of what happened in the United States (storm), but I am grateful to God to come back with the title.”
In other events on the day, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, threw 21.46 meters to win the men’s shot put for a record fifth time since he began competing for Nigeria, while Oyesade Oyetayo won the hammer throw with 65.07 metres.
In the 400m semi-finals for both women and men, some of the best athletes have already made it to the final scheduled for the last day of the 3-day event, such as Patience Okon-George, IyanuOluwa Aderemi, who ran a new personal best of 51.86 seconds, Taiwo Kudoro, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinter Lawrence, Becky Ebiyadi, who have already made it to the final in the women’s race, while Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Victor Sampson, Samson Nathaniel, Victory Achakpoekri, Tyler Johnson made it to the final in the men’s race.
The last day of the event will see the athletes compete in the final of the men’s and women’s 200 metres, as well as the 400 metres, with the 100 meters and 110 meters hurdles also at the centre.
