Delta police arrested 202 suspects in a crackdown on crime hot spots

The Delta State Police Command has arrested 202 suspected offenders in coordinated raids on criminal hideouts, brothels and locations believed to be hubs of drug activities across Asaba metropolis.

The operation carried out on Saturday also resulted in the confiscation of several vehicles found to be violating traffic regulations and state transport restrictions.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the exercise was driven by intelligence gathered by the command and carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Operations Department.

According to Edafe, the operation targeted locations identified through intelligence reports as being linked to criminal activities.

“Acting on credible intelligence generated by the State Intelligence Department (SID), operatives raided identified black spots, brothels and suspected drug dens in Asaba metropolis.”

He explained that the raids were part of the command’s ongoing strategy to dismantle criminal networks and maintain pressure on suspected criminal elements operating in the country.

A police spokesperson revealed that a total of 202 suspects were arrested in the operation, including 102 men and 100 women.

The statement added: “The operation resulted in the arrest of 202 suspects, consisting of 102 men and 100 women, for offenses relating to the operation of brothels, possession and sale of illegal drugs, and other related crimes.

“Officers also confiscated five (5) motorized vehicles, ten (10) tricycles, and ten (10) motorbikes for violating extant traffic regulations, state-imposed restrictions on the operation of tricycles, and the prohibition of motorbikes in designated areas.”

The command said the vehicles were seized in violation of existing traffic laws as well as restrictions governing the operation of tricycles and motorbikes in certain areas of the state.

Reacting to the outcome of the exercise, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reiterated the resolve of his command to intensify intelligence-led policing and maintain pressure on criminal groups across the state.

He reaffirmed the Command’s “commitment to intelligence-based policing and ongoing law enforcement operations against all forms of criminality.”

The commissioner also assured citizens that his command would continue its proactive operations to enhance security and urged the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing useful information capable of preventing crime.

According to him, “the Command will continue to deny space for criminal elements to operate” while appealing to citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activity to the police.
